Fuding produced 24,000 dan of dry tea in the first quarter.

The author learned from the Fuding City Tea Bureau that, as of March 31, Fuding City had produced 24,000 dan of dry tea in the first quarter— an increase of 9,000 dan, or 60%, compared to the same period last year. This significant growth was primarily driven by this year’s early start to spring; since the arrival of spring, temperatures have risen rapidly, with predominantly sunny and rainy weather patterns creating ideal conditions for tea buds to sprout vigorously. As a result, the tea-picking season in Fuding City began earlier than usual—about 10 days ahead of last year.
This year, the fresh spring tea leaves not only boasted excellent quality but also saw higher prices, presenting an encouraging outlook for the industry. Specifically, the price of tea leaves (one bud with one to three tender leaves just unfurling) from Fuding Dahuang tea varieties across various townships has risen to between 7 and 3 yuan per jin.

The author learned from the recently held 6th China Songyang Tea Traders Conference and Songyang Silver Monkey Tea Festival that, in spring 2013, prices for fresh tea leaves generally dropped by 5% to 10%, with the exception of Fuding white tea, whose prices soared—rising by an impressive 30% compared to last year.
Since the beginning of spring, thanks to rapidly warming temperatures and alternating sunny and rainy weather—with predominantly clear skies—the climate has been highly favorable for tea bud development. As a result, this year’s Fuding white tea harvest kicked off about 10 days earlier than last year. According to surveys conducted in tea-growing areas across townships like Diandou, Bailin, and Dianxia, fresh spring tea leaves are currently fetching high prices due to their superior quality, creating an encouraging outlook for the season. Overall, spring tea production is characterized by an earlier-than-usual harvesting period.

Yesterday morning, several tea-frying stoves were neatly arranged in a row at the entrance of the Da Shijie Tea City on Jiangdong Middle Road in Nanjing, where tea-making workers dressed in white lab coats were carefully processing fresh tea leaves just delivered from Anji.
"White tea costs have increased by 15% compared to last year," revealed Yang Xiaodong, the owner of the tea market, to our reporter. "Originally, a tea picker earned 120 yuan per day, but this year that figure has risen to 160 yuan. Meanwhile, the price of fresh tea leaves has gone up by about 20%. On top of that, the wages for skilled tea processors have also climbed—from over 200 yuan a day last year to 300 yuan today. All these factors have contributed to a general rise in white tea prices this year." He added that roughly five pounds of fresh tea leaves typically yield one pound of dried tea.
