The author learned from the Fuding City Tea Bureau that, as of March 31, Fuding City had produced 24,000 dan of dry tea in the first quarter— an increase of 9,000 dan, or 60%, compared to the same period last year. The primary reason for this surge is this year’s early start to spring; since the arrival of spring, temperatures have risen rapidly, accompanied by predominantly sunny and rainy weather patterns. These conditions have created ideal circumstances for tea buds to sprout, allowing Fuding City’s tea-picking season to begin earlier—about 10 days sooner than last year.
This spring, the quality of fresh tea leaves was excellent, driving prices higher and creating an encouraging market outlook—tea leaf prices have seen a notable increase. According to surveys and statistics from various townships, in Fuding City, the price for Fuding Dahuai tea leaves (one bud with one to three lightly unfurled leaves) ranges from 7 to 30 yuan per jin, while single-bud Fuding Dahuai tea fetches 26 to 60 yuan per jin. Compared to the same period last year, tea leaf prices for the same standard of picking have risen by 30%, resulting in significant income growth for tea farmers.
Since the start of the spring tea harvest, mild temperatures and northwesterly winds have created ideal conditions for tea buds to sprout and thrive, resulting in high-quality tea leaves. This has provided premium raw materials for producing top-grade Fuding white teas like Tai Mu Silver Needle. Meanwhile, as Fuding white tea continues to gain global recognition, demand for its superior-quality tea leaves has outpaced supply, driving a significant increase in the sector's overall output value. As of March 31, the city’s total spring tea output value reached 315.3 million yuan, representing a substantial year-on-year increase of 157.64 million yuan—nearly a 99% rise compared to the same period last year.
