Yesterday morning, several tea-frying stoves were neatly arranged in a row at the entrance of the Da Shijie Tea City on Jiangdong Middle Road in Nanjing, where tea-making workers in white lab coats were carefully processing the fresh tea leaves just delivered from Anji.

"White tea costs have increased by 15% compared to last year. 'Previously, a tea-picking worker earned 120 yuan per day, but this year that figure has risen to 160 yuan. Meanwhile, the price of fresh tea leaves has gone up by around 20%. On top of that, the wages for tea-making masters have also climbed—from just over 200 yuan a day last year to 300 yuan today. All these factors have contributed to a general rise in white tea prices this year,' revealed Yang Xiaodong, owner of a tea shop, to our reporter. He added that roughly five pounds of fresh tea leaves yield about one pound of dried tea, and it takes a skilled tea master an entire hour to process just one pound of leaves. As a result, labor costs now make up a significant portion of the overall price of the tea.'

This year, if you source from tea factories, white tea prices are about 15% higher than last year. Reporters have learned that currently, white tea is selling in the market at prices ranging roughly from 2,000 to 5,000 yuan per jin.

Freshly roasted and sold on the spot, these white teas are crafted to maximize value while keeping prices competitive—making them a true gem among teas. To cut costs, Yang Xiaodong and several other white tea merchants have joined forces to purchase tea leaves directly from farmers in Anji, Zhejiang, and Liyang, Jiangsu, bringing them straight to Nanjing, where skilled tea artisans immediately begin roasting them fresh. "In the past," explains Yangtze Evening News reporter Liu Yang, "tea factories typically bought tea leaves directly from farmers, processed them, and then resold to wholesalers, who in turn supplied retailers in the Nanjing market. By the time the product reached its final destination, costs had already ballooned due to multiple layers of intermediaries."
