The author learned from the recently held 6th China Songyang Tea Traders Conference and Songyang Silver Monkey Tea Festival that, in spring 2013, prices of fresh tea leaves for green tea generally fell by 5% to 10%, while Fuding white tea saw a remarkable surge, with its fresh leaf prices soaring by 30% compared to last year.
Since the start of spring, rapid temperature rises combined with alternating sunny and rainy weather—though predominantly sunny—have created ideal conditions for tea buds to sprout. As a result, this year’s Fuding white tea spring harvest has begun roughly 10 days earlier than last year. According to surveys conducted in tea-growing areas across townships like Diandou, Bailin, and Dianxia, fresh spring tea leaves are currently of excellent quality and fetching high prices, painting an encouraging picture for the season. Spring tea production is now entering its peak period, marked by several key characteristics: First, the harvesting season has generally started earlier this year—about 10 days ahead of last year. In lower-altitude regions such as Diandou Town, early-budding varieties like Zaofengchun were already being harvested as early as February 24th. Meanwhile, tea farmers across the city have fully entered the busy spring tea-picking and processing phase, with bustling scenes of both agricultural workers diligently picking leaves and tea enterprises busily processing them into finished products. Notably, tea leaf prices have surged significantly. Data from township-level surveys in Diandou and Bailin show that since March, the price of single-bud Fuding Dahao tea has climbed to between 84 and 104 yuan per kilogram—up 16 to 20 yuan compared to last year. Meanwhile, one-bud-one-leaf or one-bud-two-leaf teas just beginning to unfurl are now selling for 40 to 60 yuan per kilogram, an increase of 16 to 18 yuan over last year. Overall, when measured against the same picking standards, tea leaf prices have risen by about 30% compared to last year. Additionally, tea leaf quality has markedly improved. Since the start of the harvest, mild temperatures, clear skies, and gentle north winds have provided optimal conditions for the vigorous growth of new tea shoots—and especially for handpicking and processing premium-grade Fuding white teas like Taibao Yinzheng. As a result, the overall quality of the harvested tea leaves has reached unprecedented levels.
