Overcoming green trade barriers to promote the healthy development of the white tea industry
2011-06-27
Fuding is known as the "Home of Chinese White Tea," and the tea industry has historically been both a traditional pillar and a distinctive specialty in Fuding, serving as a key driver for farmers to boost their incomes and create employment opportunities. In recent years, Fuding’s white tea exports have seen steady growth: by the end of 2010, annual exports of Baihao Yinzhen reached 350 tons, Bai Mudan totaled 300 tons, Shou Mei stood at 500 tons, and white tea slices hit 500 tons. Today, these products are marketed across 17 countries and regions, including the United States, Japan, the UK, and Germany.
However, as Fuding white tea continues its journey into global markets, we’ve observed a rising trend in a new form of trade protectionism—namely, green trade barriers.

This year's May Day was truly sunny and perfect for outdoor adventures. Company Chairman Zhang Zhengku, accompanied by his wife, visited the Zhangzhou military unit— a place he hadn’t been to in decades—and once again cherished the memories of his youthful days spent there. After three decades apart, stepping back onto this familiar ground felt incredibly heartwarming. The veterans from those days have now become respected senior officers, while wave after wave of new recruits has joined the ranks. Meanwhile, the unit itself has undergone remarkable transformations.
Mr. Zhang received a warm welcome from the company’s company commander and political instructor, and he happily presented them with his company’s finest white tea. After tasting our exquisite white tea, the commander couldn’t stop praising it: “Wonderful tea! Truly exceptional!” A wave of warmth instantly melted into everyone’s hearts.

Researchers at Kingston University teamed up with the British essential oil brand NYR to test the health benefits of 21 different plant and herb extracts. They discovered that all the plants studied offered some degree of health advantage, but surprisingly, white tea stood out as providing the greatest benefits compared to the others. Professor Declan Norton from Kingston University’s Faculty of Life Sciences in southwest London noted that this study highlights the remarkable health-promoting properties of white tea.
