Xinhua News Agency, Fuzhou, September 30 (Reporters Kang Miao and Li Huiying) — The Fuzhou Promotion Center for Fujian Fuding White Tea Culture was officially unveiled on the 29th, coinciding with the launch ceremony of the book "Talking About White Tea: Empowering Villages and Enriching Farmers." Fuding white tea is poised to become Fujian's next nationwide tea brand, following the success of Anxi Tieguanyin and Wuyi Rock Tea.
Fujian is a major province in the tea industry, with Anxi Tieguanyin and Wuyi Rock Tea already established as nationally renowned tea brands. Meanwhile, Fuding in Fujian is not only the birthplace of China’s white tea but also the country’s largest production area and export hub for this delicate beverage—earning it the prestigious title: "World White Tea is in China, and Chinese White Tea is in Fuding." Yet despite its exceptional quality and heritage, Fuding white tea has long remained relatively unknown outside its local region, with its fame still far behind that of Anxi Tieguanyin and Wuyi Rock Tea.
A relevant official from the Cross-Strait Tea Industry Exchange Association stated that in recent years, Fuding City has been diligently working to uncover and enhance the cultural depth of its white tea industry, leveraging culture to unlock higher value-added opportunities. The city has wholeheartedly focused on building both a public and distinctive brand for Fuding white tea, effectively establishing the brand’s identity while significantly boosting its recognition and reputation in the market.
Starting last year, the Fujian Provincial Poverty Alleviation and Development Association, the Fuding Municipal Government, and the Mindong Daily jointly hosted the essay contest titled "Talking about White Tea to Strengthen Villages and Enrich Farmers." "Talking about White Tea to Strengthen Villages and Enrich Farmers" is one of the notable outcomes of this initiative.
Chen Zengguang, President of the Fujian Provincial Poverty Alleviation and Development Association, stated that Fuding City has actively established and promoted village-level tea cooperatives, consolidating farmers' scattered tea gardens into larger, more organized operations through cooperative structures. This approach not only enhances the intensity of tea farmers' production practices but also helps reduce pesticide residues, ultimately improving both tea quality and economic returns. Additionally, the city is encouraging tea farmers and merchants to open tea shops, teahouses, and retail outlets across China, creating robust sales networks. As a result, Fuding white tea has become a key project in local poverty alleviation efforts, driving rural development and boosting farmers' incomes.
According to Cheng Shuping, Acting Mayor of Fuding City, Fuding boasts a total tea garden area of 210,000 mu. In 2010, the city’s total tea production reached 17,600 tons, with an overall output value of 2 billion yuan—of which 5,100 tons were Fuding white tea, contributing 766 million yuan in value. Currently, nearly 400,000 people in Fuding are directly or indirectly involved in the tea industry, accounting for more than 60% of the city’s total population. Additionally, Fuding has established over 1,000 tea marketing outlets in major and medium-sized cities across China.
In recent years, Fuding White Tea has successively earned the titles of "National Geographical Indication Certification Trademark" and "China Famous Trademark," and was also included in the "National-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List." Additionally, it was recognized by the China International Tea Culture Research Association as a "Famous Chinese Cultural Tea." In 2010, it was selected as one of the "Top Ten Famous Teas of the China Expo" and became the official tea served at the United Nations Pavilion during the Shanghai World Expo.
The venerable tea authority Zhang Tianfu, who is over 100 years old, attended the unveiling ceremony and the launch event for his book "Talking About White Tea: Strengthening Villages and Enriching Farmers" on the 29th. Despite his advanced age, he remains in robust health and has a deep passion for Fuding white tea. He shared, "Every morning, I wake up early and enjoy a large cup of white tea—it clears my mind, lightens my body, and helps me live longer and healthier." (End)
