"Over 90% of tea priced at more than 400 yuan per kilogram is consumed by Chinese consumers themselves, making China the world’s leading nation in luxury tea consumption," said a representative from the China Tea Circulation Association during an interview with reporters on March 28. Industry insiders noted that this trend stems both from long-standing consumer habits cultivated across global markets and from the lack of effective oversight mechanisms for luxury goods domestically.
Currently, China ranks first in the world in the production of various types of tea, including spring tea, black tea, dark tea, and floral tea. However, most of the tea exported is low-value-added black tea, sold at mid-to-lower price levels. Meanwhile, the domestic market is buzzing with hype around "premium teas" and "sky-high-priced teas," yet exports remain minimal despite this growing domestic demand.
Industry insiders analyze that the global tea market is dominated by black tea, with a growing emphasis on convenient, "fast-food-style" tea bags and small-packaged teas. Meanwhile, the domestic market exhibits a blind pursuit of "luxurious and innovative" tea varieties. From the sky-high-priced "Dragon Well" priced at 180,000 yuan to premium teas like Jin Jun Mei and Da Hong Pao, which fetch tens of thousands of yuan per kilogram, these high-end offerings have become essential choices for corporate gifts and hospitality.
