On October 18, during the keynote session of the 8th China Tea Industry Economic Annual Conference, Professor Liu Zhonghua, a doctoral supervisor and professor at Hunan Agricultural University, delivered a presentation titled "Tea Consumption for Health and White Tea," highlighting that the tea industry currently faces numerous imbalances in its development. Looking ahead, he emphasized that regardless of whether it’s in cultivation, processing, or marketing—key areas crucial to China’s tea industry—the primary focus must remain on ensuring the quality and safety of tea products. This holds true equally for Fuding white tea.

Agricultural Sector: Developing Profitable Tea Gardens

Professor Liu pointed out that China's tea industry, particularly in the tea-growing sector, faces four key challenges: imbalances between expanding tea garden areas and rising tea yields, discrepancies between growth in garden size/yield and improvements in farm profitability, mismatches between increasing tea cultivation and growing consumer demand for organic products, and an imbalance between the level of agricultural machinery used in tea farming and the ongoing shortage of skilled labor. These factors are currently constraining the industry's growth. As a result, the future trajectory of China's tea industry is expected to evolve along four distinct paths: area expansion, yield enhancement, quality improvement, and efficiency-driven growth. hkJ Fuding News Network | Ningde's Leading News Portal

Last year, Fuding City boasted a total tea garden area of 210,000 mu, with an annual tea production of 17,500 tons—up by 5.4% compared to the previous year. Among these, white tea accounted for 5,100 tons, representing a significant increase of 13.3%. The city’s total gross output value of raw tea reached 700 million yuan, while per capita tea income for farmers in mountainous regions surged to 1,861 yuan. Meanwhile, the tea-related workforce across the city expanded to 376,000 people, contributing to a robust total tea industry output valued at 2 billion yuan. As a result, the tea economy continues to grow and thrive.

To strengthen the development of Fuding white tea, the Fuding City government has allocated a budget of 1 million yuan annually since 2008, with annual increases of 10%. Key areas receiving support and incentives include the renovation of low-yield tea gardens, expansion of tea-growing bases, promotion of organic tea production, development of green-certified tea products, and the establishment of a robust tea quality-testing and supervision system. Fuding’s white tea industry also began as a small-scale operation, initially driven by individual farmers. Over time, it has evolved into a more structured "farmer + base + company" cultivation model, which is now being gradually adopted across the city. This shift reflects a transition from traditional farming practices toward sustainable, organic methods. Meanwhile, tea garden management has become increasingly standardized and scientifically managed, leading to continuous expansion of cultivated areas. However, the industry still faces challenges such as limited mechanization in tea operations and a growing shortage of labor.

Today, Fuding white tea is leading the nation in the development of the organic tea industry. Fuding City has become the only pilot unit in our province selected as a national demonstration zone for building a product quality traceability system in the agricultural sector—there are just four such demonstration sites nationwide.

Processing Sector: The Fusion of Tradition and Technological Innovation

Currently, Fuding City is home to 360 tea processing enterprises operating as distributors, including 41 large-scale companies, 5 provincial-level leading enterprises, and 5 firms with import-export licenses. The city boasts nearly 10,000 marketing professionals and has established over 1,000 sales outlets. Meanwhile, the "Fuding White Tea" brand is valued at more than 2.5 billion yuan. Nevertheless, tea businesses in Fuding are still advancing rather slowly in adopting modern techniques and mechanized production methods, while traditional processing methods—and the prevalent small-scale workshop and factory models—continue to dominate the industry.

"Modern tea processing increasingly demands innovation and reform in machinery and equipment to drive improvements in industry quality and foster product innovation," said Professor Liu. "Chinese tea-processing companies must continuously upgrade their machinery, optimize product structures, and expand into advanced, value-added processing."

Over the past five years, Fuding white tea has steadily transitioned from traditional processing methods to the integration of modern techniques, evolving from a single-product focus into a diversified production chain. Encouragingly, tea companies like Fujian Yinlong Tea Technology Co., Ltd. have taken the lead in continuously researching and innovating processing technologies, paving the way for a sustainable future for Fuding’s white tea industry through the adoption of mechanized, automated, standardized, and hygienic production practices.

In early May of this year, the GABA white tea capsules developed by Yurongxiang Tea Company were approved by an expert panel in Fuzhou and are now being submitted to the Provincial Health Department for registration and approval. This innovative product is a new white tea creation born from Yurongxiang’s successful integration of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) tea—originally introduced from the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences—into their proprietary white tea processing techniques. Meanwhile, a growing array of white tea-based beverages and food products has already hit the market, including "Cordyceps White Tea," "Qingye White Tea," "White Tea Xylitol," and "White Tea Tooth-Care Tablets." These diverse offerings signal that Fuding white tea is poised to enter a new era as a high-value, high-margin industry. By expanding its product lineup, Fuding white tea is charting a path toward even greater success—and thanks to cutting-edge technological innovations, the region’s tea industry is already reaping the rewards of this transformation.

Additionally, "quality and safety" have consistently guided the entire production and processing journey of Fuding white tea. Currently, three tea-producing enterprises in Fuding City have obtained Global Standard certification, while 48 others hold QS certification. Moreover, Fuding is one of the 18 pilot counties selected nationwide for establishing a traceability system aimed at ensuring agricultural product quality. Among these, four leading enterprises are already actively piloting the implementation of a quality and safety traceability system for their agricultural products, placing Fuding’s tea industry at the forefront of traceability initiatives among tea-producing counties across the province.

Marketing: A flower blooming within walls still spreads its fragrance far and wide.

Professor Liu pointed out that currently, China's tea industry market still faces several imbalances: the uneven pace of expanding into international versus domestic markets, the gap between a wide variety of tea products and the scarcity of well-known brands, the mismatch between robust marketing channel development and consumer-driven factors, and the disparity between businesses' capital needs and the industry's profitability. "Looking ahead, Chinese tea producers must strengthen brand building, innovate marketing strategies, diversify financing channels, and effectively connect both domestic and international markets," Professor Liu said.

However, the saying "flowers bloom within the wall but their fragrance spreads beyond" seems to aptly describe the awkward situation of Fuding white tea. Over the years, Fuding white tea has earned a strong reputation overseas, with many European and American countries conducting far more in-depth research on its health benefits than in China itself. Moreover, these regions have developed a more sophisticated approach to the tea’s downstream industrial applications and innovations compared to China. Yet, domestically, many consumers still have only a superficial understanding—or even no awareness at all—of Fuding white tea, particularly in certain regions where the tea remains virtually unknown.

According to statistics, despite the global economic slowdown and the challenges facing China's tea exports overall, Fuding white tea has bucked the trend, experiencing a surge in exports. As of the end of August this year, 381 tea companies in Fuding reported a 77% year-on-year increase in white tea sales revenue for the first half of the year. Meanwhile, white tea exports have already reached 2,600 tons—surpassing last year's total export volume of approximately 3,000 tons for the entire year. This clearly highlights how popular Fuding white tea has become on the international stage.

China's vast market potential has always captured the attention of businesses from around the world. Capturing the domestic market is a crucial step in driving the development of Fuding City’s white tea industry. Happily, after this year’s groundbreaking research findings on the health and wellness benefits of Fuding white tea were unveiled in Hangzhou, Chinese consumers now have access to a more scientifically sound and authoritative understanding of white tea’s traditional health-promoting properties—information that’s being shared with tea enthusiasts across the country. Through rigorous scientific investigation, researchers have identified eight key health benefits of Fuding white tea: its ability to enhance skin beauty and combat aging, prevent photoaging of skin cells, lower blood lipids and glucose levels, protect against alcohol-induced liver damage caused by excessive drinking, reduce inflammation, balance gut microbiota, and improve digestive health. Moreover, comparative studies conducted on white teas aged 1, 6, and 18 years revealed that as white tea matures over time, its age-old varieties demonstrate significantly superior efficacy in areas such as anti-inflammatory effects, blood sugar regulation, liver-protective actions against alcohol-related damage, and overall gut health improvement—outperforming freshly produced white teas in these critical areas.

Holding high the "health card" has become a shining "pass" on Fuding white tea's journey to market success.
