April 11, West Lake Longjing Information Platform: Bailiu Village in Fuding City is officially recognized as China’s No. 1 White Tea Village. Every household in the village owns tea gardens, with some cultivating as little as a few mu and others managing dozens of mu. Following the establishment of the Bailiu White Tea Professional Cooperative in December 2006, scattered tea farmers were united into a strong collective. For years, the cooperative has faithfully upheld Fuding’s traditional white tea-making techniques, fostering a sustainable economic model that integrates "association + enterprise + base + farmer," enabling small-scale production to thrive within a robust, market-driven cycle.
"Thanks to the sales channel, he doesn’t have to go anywhere else—his village can handle all the demand. The prices are roughly the same as elsewhere, though factoring in time and transportation still makes it slightly more expensive overall," tea farmer Mei Chuanpin told the reporter. He added that establishing the tea cooperative has brought numerous benefits to local tea growers.
Meanwhile, to capitalize on the unique advantages of "Fuding Da Bai Cha" as its place of origin and enhance the efficiency of tea cultivation and production, the Bailiu White Tea Professional Cooperative has begun marketing the "Fuding White Tea" products—crafted by its members—through the cooperative itself. Members are gradually transitioning their over 2,000 mu of tea gardens toward eco-friendly, green, and organic practices, packaging their teas under their own branded labels while steadily reducing the sale of loose-leaf tea. In terms of processing and crafting finished tea products, the cooperative encourages all members to meticulously follow the time-honored, village-specific tea-making techniques passed down through generations. This ensures that the "Bailiu Village" brand white tea series is produced using traditional handcrafting methods and natural sun-drying processes—never resorting to coal-fired mechanical drying. As a result, the cooperative’s white teas retain Fuding’s signature health benefits, including "three resistances and three reductions," making them a premium choice for tea enthusiasts seeking both quality and tradition.
"As a time-honored craft passed down through generations in Bailiu, we still aim to preserve the traditional techniques," Mei Chuansheng, chairman of the cooperative, told reporters. "Traditionally crafted white tea not only boasts exceptional taste and quality but also offers superior health benefits compared to teas produced using modern methods."
Reportedly, the cooperative has now grown to include 220 large-scale white tea growers and 20 tea marketers. With more than 1 million yuan in cooperative equity, it has established a 3,000-mu white tea plantation—nearly half of which is owned by farmers who contributed their assets as part of this scaled-up enterprise.
