Product Details

The best time to transplant tea seedlings is either in the autumn, when tea plants cease their above-ground growth, or in early spring of the following year. During autumn and winter, while the aboveground parts of the tea plant stop growing, the root system below ground remains actively developing. Transplanting after late October helps the roots recover quickly, enabling the seedlings to resume vigorous growth as early as the next season. If autumn drought conditions are severe, consider transplanting in early spring instead, when rainfall gradually increases and there’s no risk of frost damage—this approach significantly boosts the survival rate of transplanted seedlings. When selecting tea seedlings, opt for high-quality, clonally propagated varieties that meet specific criteria: seedlings should be at least 25 cm tall, with a main stem base measuring 3–4 mm in diameter, and free from pests or diseases. When digging up the seedlings, minimize root damage and ensure they’re planted with as much soil intact as possible. If planting on a sunny day, thoroughly water the nursery bed the day before to maintain optimal root quality. After lifting the seedlings, dip their roots into a solution of abT Rooting Powder No. 3 diluted to a concentration of 1 × 10⁻⁵ (1 gram of rooting powder mixed with 100 kg of water). This treatment promotes rapid root recovery, enhancing the overall survival rate of the seedlings. For planting, space seedlings densely across the field: 4,000 to 8,000 plants per 667 square meters. Use single-row planting with row spacing of 1.5 meters and plant distances of 0.33 meters between each cluster, placing three seedlings per cluster. Alternatively, for double-row planting, maintain a wider row spacing of 1.5 meters and a narrower inter-plant spacing of 0.5 meters, still planting three seedlings per cluster. Before planting, prepare two long ropes marked at 33-centimeter intervals along their lengths. Secure these marked ropes firmly at both ends of the planting trench to precisely define the positions of tea rows and individual clusters. Then, carefully dig planting holes at each marked spot. Each hole should be about 20 cm deep, with one person responsible for digging while another handles planting simultaneously. As you dig, gently spread out the seedling roots within the hole to allow them to naturally expand, then backfill with soil, pressing it firmly around the roots. After covering half the hole, thoroughly water the area to help the seedlings establish strong roots. Once the water has fully soaked in, add an additional layer of soil, approximately 3–5 cm thick—avoiding depths that are either too shallow or too deep. This careful soil management ensures rapid recovery and maximizes the survival rate of the young tea plants. Finally, after planting, promptly prune the seedlings by leaving 1–2 well-developed branches at a height of about 15 cm above the ground. This initial shaping cut encourages healthy growth and sets the stage for robust development in the coming seasons.
