"Tea is 'a remedy for health and a delight in life.' And yet, tea is something you grow to appreciate gradually—savoring tea is like getting to know a person; just as a person’s character reflects the quality of their tea."

“Tasting tea is like getting to know a person,” they say. Choose an environment that’s graceful, serene, and subtly elegant—settle in, brew a cup of exquisite tea, and allow yourself to fully immerse in this tranquil setting. Savor the tea with a calm, unhurried mind, letting its delicate aroma guide you as you reflect on life itself. Drinking tea alone isn’t just about quenching your thirst; it’s also about appreciating the tea’s color, fragrance, and flavor, savoring its bittersweet complexity, and ultimately embracing its profound simplicity, elegance, and harmony. Through self-reflection and mindful awareness, you’ll uncover the tea’s true essence, gaining deeper insights into life’s many layers—and ultimately reaching a state where heaven, earth, and humanity harmoniously align. Take a gentle sip, let it linger briefly on your tongue, then slowly swallow. You’ll notice a subtle bitterness—a reminder that even the most refined experiences often carry a touch of challenge. Yet, as you continue sipping, that bitterness gives way to a delightful sweetness. Yes, indeed, this is the very essence of tea—and perhaps, too, the essence of life itself. Tea has the power to cleanse the heart and cultivate inner stillness. When your mind is clear, you can effortlessly release worries and distractions. And when your spirit is calm, wisdom naturally emerges, helping you navigate both the complexities of daily life and the uncertainties of work with ease and grace.

In people's minds, tea is a sacred item, offered to Buddha, to honor ancestors, and presenting a cup of clear tea is naturally the best way to express infinite respect. "A person's character is like the quality of tea," expressing the hope to be as pure as tea and to be respected by others. Tea also symbolizes steadfastness and loyalty in love, and the flourishing growth of tea trees carries the meaning of having many children and grandchildren. In some places and among certain ethnic groups, tea is involved throughout the wedding ceremony, so the entire marriage ritual is collectively called "Three Teas and Six Rites." The three teas refer to the tea served at the engagement, the tea ceremony at the wedding, and the tea shared in the bridal chamber. In some cases, the three teas refer to the teas brewed during the proposal, matchmaking meeting, and before entering the bridal chamber. These customs show how ordinary people use tea to express their most sincere wishes, which is an important reason why tea is cherished by the Chinese people.

“Tasting tea is like getting to know a person—just as a person’s character reflects in the quality of their tea,” I know there’s a deeper meaning behind these words. What I’ve shared here is merely the humble insight of a beginner tea enthusiast, hardly worth mentioning. But one thing’s for sure: tea truly is a treasure. Perhaps you’re just like me—simply an ordinary Chinese person. If that’s the case, why not carve out a little time each day to brew yourself a cup of tea, savor its delicate flavors, and let it guide you in appreciating the beauty—and perhaps even the wisdom—of life itself?

People are as diverse as the myriad facets of the universe, and tea boasts a thousand different expressions. Just as tea can be categorized into various types, so too can people—but this distinction is determined by quality, an unchangeable truth. After all, exceptional tea can withstand the test of boiling water, and similarly, truly high-quality individuals must also endure the wear and tear of life, remaining clear-eyed and pure-hearted while staying true to their innate nature. When tea is poured into a cup, it gracefully rises and falls, releasing its rich aroma in waves. At first glance, it may seem ordinary or even unremarkable—but only those who take the time to savor it can truly discern its subtle nuances. As the legendary writer Sanmao once said about tea: "The first sip tastes bitter like life itself; the second brings sweetness, like love; and the third is light and gentle, like a soft breeze." But if we apply this same measure to people, do you think their flavors could ever be limited to just three distinct notes?

While savoring tea, one reflects on it, letting its essence inspire thoughts and contemplation. Tea doesn’t seek the intensity of alcohol, yet it refuses to settle for the blandness of plain water. Uncompromising in its nature, it remains steadfastly fragrant, subtly captivating, and sweetly true to itself—its very essence untouched by external influences. If, indeed, we could live our lives with the same grace and humility as tea, perhaps that would be the mark of a truly perfect existence.

Sipping tea is like making friends—only by taking your time can you truly savor its delicate fragrance, fully grasp the subtle emotions it evokes, and sense the unspoken understanding that blossoms between you. Though tea is refined and elegant, it has the power to warm the heart in ways that words simply can’t capture.

Sipping tea is like savoring yourself—when you lift the cup to your lips and take a gentle sip, letting the rich, fragrant aroma and refreshing warmth envelop you, aren’t you also tasting a deeper part of who you are at that very moment?
