Chinese people enjoy drinking green tea, but few realize that this actually leads to a waste of the tea's nutrients. Tea contains both water-soluble and fat-soluble components; unfortunately, the latter isn’t soluble in water. No matter how many times you brew the tea, these fat-soluble nutrients will always remain in the leaves. That’s why eating the tea leaves themselves is the best way to fully absorb their valuable nutrients.

Tea leaves are rich in nutrients.

Water-soluble nutrients in tea primarily include catechins, vitamin C, and amino acids; while fat-soluble nutrients mainly consist of vitamin E, carotene, dietary fiber, minerals, chlorophyll, and a portion of catechins.

Among water-insoluble substances, vitamin E exhibits anti-aging properties; meanwhile, catechins are an essential nutrient. Catechins contain tea polyphenols, which are highly effective at neutralizing oxygen free radicals and combating aging. Recent studies have also shown that these compounds not only help fade dark spots and promote weight loss but also lower cholesterol and blood lipid levels, inhibit leukemia cells, and even offer protection against influenza.

It's best to eat 6 grams daily.

The effective intake of catechins is about 1 gram per day. For most people, consuming just 0.8 grams—equivalent to 6 grams of tea leaves—is sufficient.

Typically, we use about 1 to 1.5 grams of tea leaves when brewing a single cup of tea. Based on this, 6 grams of tea leaves should be enough to make roughly 6 cups. However, drinking tea versus consuming it directly doesn’t result in the same level of catechin intake—only by eating tea can you ensure that all the catechins from those 6 grams are fully absorbed by your body. That’s why experts recommend incorporating 6 grams of tea leaves into your daily diet, paired with 1 to 2 cups of green tea, as the optimal way to maximize catechin absorption.

There are many ways to enjoy it.

There are two ways to enjoy tea: one is using the brewed tea leaves to stir-fry dishes, and the other is eating them directly.

The latter has several popular ways of being enjoyed in Japan—feel free to give them a try!

  1. After stirring, sprinkle it over rice as a seasoning. Grind green tea into small particles measuring 1–2 millimeters in diameter, then toss them onto the rice before serving.

  2. Used for making pastries. Some people enjoy baking homemade cookies or biscuits at home—by mixing tea powder with flour before baking, you can create beautifully green-colored green tea cookies.

  3. Consume with kelp. Rinse the kelp in clean water, soak it for 6 hours, then remove, sun-dry or oven-dry it, and grind it into a fine powder. Mix the powder thoroughly with green tea and store it for later use. Take 20 grams twice daily—add the mixture to a cup, pour in boiling water, cover, and let it steep for 15 minutes before drinking. This preparation helps clear heat, cool the blood, promote diuresis, and lower blood pressure.
