Drinking a large cup of white tea every morning can clear the mind, lighten the body, and promote longevity—truly making white tea the ultimate wellness elixir, as endorsed by Zhang Tianfu, the revered grandmaster of the tea world who lived to age 108. Since 2009, consumption of white tea has steadily risen, prompting tea companies in Fuding to actively champion this premium beverage. To further boost its national presence, the Fuding Municipal Government authorized tea enterprises to establish the Xiamen, Fuzhou, Beijing, Chongqing, and Guangzhou White Tea Culture Exchange & Cooperation Centers—each managed by leading tea businesses. This strategic move marks Fuding’s comprehensive rollout of white tea culture, reaching major tea-trading cities across China. Meanwhile, during the 2011 Guangzhou International Tea Expo, a special auction of aged Fuding white teas fetched remarkable prices: 30-year-old, 26-year-old, and 20-year-old teas sold for an astonishing RMB 176,000, RMB 174,000, and RMB 172,000, respectively—once again setting new records as the highest-ever auction prices for vintage white tea collectibles.

Was 2012 the boom year for Fuding White Tea?

The head of the Guangzhou branch of Fujian Guangfu Tea Industry Co., Ltd. told reporters that white tea has already secured a significant position in Guangzhou's Fangcun Tea Wholesale Market—especially aged white teas that have been stored for many years, with prices often exceeding 1,000 yuan per jin. Meanwhile, the number of consumers who appreciate old-style white tea continues to grow.

Will white tea spark a nationwide craze, just like black tea has? A reporter’s visit revealed that most tea companies are adopting a wait-and-see approach.

"At least in Fujian, it’s difficult to establish a trend—consumption habits for Tieguanyin, black tea, and oolong tea within the province are deeply entrenched and hard to shake. Meanwhile, white tea production remains limited, and its flavor profile still requires greater acceptance from tea enthusiasts, making large-scale promotion challenging," said Wu Zifu, Chairman of Xiamen Xinshangpin Paper Arts Co., Ltd. Wu Zifu, who has spent years working in tea packaging, has developed a keen sense of the evolving trends in the tea industry. He noted that, based on the current market dynamics, these two major tea categories are currently playing only supporting roles in Fujian’s tea market.

Was 2012 the boom year for Fuding White Tea?

Chen Zhixiong, Secretary-General of the Xiamen Tea Association, said in a media interview that it’s still too early to tell whether white tea will spark a widespread trend—only time will reveal. For white tea to gain broad consumer acceptance, it must have a compelling "selling point"—whether it’s its high amino acid content or its powerful health benefits. Once such a unique selling proposition is established, combined with careful marketing strategies by retailers, white tea can finally break into the market and capture consumers’ attention.

Industry insiders also believe that after several years of black tea's popularity, tea enthusiasts have grown accustomed to it and are now seeking fresh new highlights. Meanwhile, the rising appeal of white tea is providing merchants with exciting new ways to attract tea lovers. Regardless, industry experts agree that if white tea and dark teas manage to gain momentum, offering consumers more diverse options will undoubtedly be a positive development.

Was 2012 the boom year for Fuding White Tea?

Today, Fuding white tea, as an emerging gem among tea varieties, is gaining increasing recognition and popularity among discerning connoisseurs for its unique and remarkable health benefits. It has especially captured the attention—and admiration—of consumers in Europe, America, and Southeast Asia, earning it the title from researcher Luo Shaojun as "a distinguished family within China’s vast tea community, renowned both domestically and internationally, with health-promoting properties that rival those of wild ginseng." Looking ahead to the next decade, as global demand for white tea continues to rise, Fuding white tea stands poised for significant growth and expansion on the international stage.

In recent years, China's tea market has boomed, sparking waves of enthusiasm for "Pu'er tea" and "Tieguanyin," with the "black tea craze" particularly gaining momentum since 2010—each trend surpassing the last. As black tea continues to captivate consumers, many companies are now turning their attention to white tea, recognizing it as a "white gold mine" with immense untapped potential.

Starting from 2007, and especially in 2011, Fuding City has been leveraging government support to create a platform where businesses take center stage. As a result, one tea culture festival or industry expo after another has emerged, each sending a powerful message: white tea—known for its unique health benefits and ideal for long-term storage—is the rising star of China’s tea industry.
