Affected by the consistently rainy and chilly weather this year, the spring tea harvest in Fuding has been delayed by about 10 days compared to last year. However, based on the initial small batch of spring tea now available at the Min-Zhe border tea flower trading market in Fuding City, prices remain largely stable compared to last year, with some varieties even seeing a slight increase.
On March 21, the Min-Zhe border Camellia Flower Trading Market in Fuding City was already buzzing with activity, as tea farmers and traders set up their stalls and kicked off the spring tea trading season. According to reports, although only a limited quantity of spring tea has hit the market so far—around 3,000 to 4,000 kilograms daily—the varieties available are predominantly Fuding Da Bai tea, with just a small amount of Fuding Da Hao tea. Despite this, prices remain surprisingly high: White Tip Silver Needle green buds were selling for between 84 and 90 yuan per kilogram, while fresh tea leaves fetched 46 to 60 yuan per kilogram. Right from the start, the spring tea attracted numerous buyers eager to secure their purchases.
Lin Zhuyong, a tea merchant currently purchasing fresh tea leaves at the market, told me that this is due to the consistently rainy, chilly weather and insufficient sunlight since the beginning of the year, which has significantly slowed down the growth of spring tea buds. As a result, the full market launch of this year’s “Fuding Dahao Tea” spring harvest is about 10 days later than usual. Currently, the supply of Dahao tea leaves remains relatively low, but it’s expected to surge in volume from the end of this month through early April.
Mei Shoushan, chairman of the town's tea association, noted that despite this year’s rainy and cool weather, tea plants have generally thrived, with minimal impact on both yield and quality. In the coming period, daily trading volumes of fresh tea leaves are expected to steadily increase. Around the Qingming Festival, the spring tea-picking season will reach its peak, drawing large quantities of freshly harvested tea from Fuding’s townships as well as neighboring counties like Xiapu, Zherong, and Fuan—flowing into the Mindong Border Trade Tea Flower Market in Diandou for trading. At that time, nearly 100 tons of spring tea will hit the market each day, and prices are anticipated to rise this year.
