Recently, we learned from the Fuding City Tea Office that on June 16 this year, the 2012 Beijing International Tea Expo—hosted by the China Tea Circulation Association—will feature a press conference unveiling the health and wellness benefits of Fuding white tea. The event will announce the groundbreaking findings on the therapeutic properties of Fuding white tea, presented by Professor Liu Zhonghua, Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Utilization of Plant Functional Components and professor at Hunan Agricultural University.
As people’s living standards and cultural tastes continue to rise, drinking tea has become more than just a way to quench thirst and soothe the throat—it’s now a trendy, health-conscious leisure activity deeply rooted in wellness. A simple cup of tea carries with it thousands of years of China’s rich history and vibrant culture. When "tea" transcends its practical purpose to embody a full-fledged cultural tradition, it gains deeper layers of meaning and significance. This evolution not only preserves and nurtures tea culture itself but also serves as a beautiful testament to China’s enduring heritage and its profound influence on global cultural exchange.
When Beijing's Malian Dao Tea Street is mentioned, it’s truly "known to every household." What began as a narrow alley lined with warehouses used for stockpiling goods has gradually evolved into a thriving tea district. Dubbed the "Number One Tea Street in Beijing," this bustling 1,500-meter-long thoroughfare now boasts ten large-scale tea markets and over 3,000 tea shops, showcasing premium teas from major tea-producing regions such as Fujian, Anhui, Zhejiang, Yunnan, and Guizhou. The street generates annual sales of 2.5 billion yuan—accounting for one-tenth of China’s total tea sales—and among these, tea merchants originally from Fuding have established as many as 127 tea shops. Today, Malian Dao Tea Street stands as the largest tea market in Northern China and serves as the region’s foremost tea distribution hub in North China.
Although Beijing doesn’t produce tea locally, it’s famously known for its deep appreciation and expertise in tea. Du Guangmin, Chairman of the Beijing International Tea City, has a forward-thinking vision and ambitious aspirations in this regard. He often says: "Our goal isn’t just to fill Beijing with the fragrant aroma of Fuding white tea—we also aim to spread the allure of Chinese tea far beyond our borders, and even bring the global essence of tea right back to the capital!" Since the establishment of the Tea City, he has been passionately dedicated to sourcing premium domestic and international teas for Beijing residents, while simultaneously creating a professional trade platform that connects friends from around the world. Today, the Beijing International Tea City boasts an exquisite collection of fine teas from across China and beyond—boasting not only a dazzling array of renowned Chinese teas but also over a hundred internationally acclaimed varieties from countries like India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Kenya, and dozens more. Thanks to this unique offering, Beijing residents can now savor the finest teas from every corner of the globe—all without ever leaving the city!
This year, to ensure Beijing consumers can enjoy premium tea, Du Guangmin was captivated by Fuding white tea—a variety that’s “blooming beautifully within the walls yet fragrant beyond.” It’s called “blooming within the walls” because, despite its rich history, it’s far from being a newly discovered, obscure gem. In fact, Fuding white tea boasts an illustrious heritage spanning over 880 years. Meanwhile, it’s dubbed “fragrant beyond the walls” because, for centuries, this specialty export tea has been overwhelmingly popular overseas—95% of Fuding white tea is sold abroad, winning hearts in markets across Europe, America, Southeast Asia, and more. Due to its limited presence in China’s domestic market, most Chinese consumers remain largely unaware of this remarkable tea, which deeply saddens those who truly appreciate and adore it. Yet, as the saying goes, "true beauty cannot be hidden." Du Guangmin explains: "White tea stands out among all fine teas for its exceptionally smooth, lingering sweetness, its time-honored, naturally rustic production methods, and its extraordinary health-promoting properties. We’re committed to establishing Fuding white tea as the leading brand in the industry, bringing healthier, more natural, and exquisite tea options to the people of Beijing." What makes Fuding white tea even more exceptional is that, as a high-mountain tea, it’s harvested later than lower-altitude varieties—meaning it escaped the damaging effects of early-year frost entirely. As a result, this tea not only retains its delicate aroma but also develops a richer, more complex flavor profile.
The quality of tea directly affects consumer interests, which is also the source of the vitality of Fuding white tea. Controlling tea quality and ensuring monitoring throughout every process and every step, with enterprise testing standards higher than national standards, and adhering to standardized quality management has always been a top priority for the Fuding municipal government and tea-related departments. From the growth of the tea trees to the tea entering consumers' cups, Fuding strictly controls every stage. At the source, Fuding annually hires tea experts to supervise production, inspect, and allocate tea in the tea-producing areas. Every batch sent to Beijing is accompanied by a pesticide residue inspection report. Before tea enters the tea market, it must first be inspected at the National Tea Quality Inspection Station, and only tea that meets quality standards is allowed into the market, ensuring that every leaf of tea is pure, green, pollution-free, and healthy.
We gladly endure the hard work for tea—because it’s worth every bit. This unwavering dedication is captured in the delicate aroma of tea held in the hands of our customers, in the gentle smile that graces their lips, and in the lingering, unforgettable aftertaste that lingers on their tongues. Today, Fuding white tea carries the timeless fragrance of Chinese tea far beyond borders, spreading into countless homes and even reaching across the globe…
