Led by Professor Zhonghua Liu, Director of the National Research Center for Engineering Technology on Utilization of Plant Functional Components and a professor at Hunan Agricultural University, this groundbreaking study brought together technical expertise and research teams from five renowned institutions: the National Research Center for Engineering Technology on Utilization of Plant Functional Components, the Center for Modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Tsinghua University, the Center for Aging Medicine Research at Peking University, the Key Laboratory of Tea Science under the Ministry of Education, and the Subhealth Intervention Technology Laboratory affiliated with the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Focusing specifically on Fuding white tea—particularly its varieties Baihao Yinzhen and Bai Mudan—the research team conducted over 30 rigorous, scientifically validated analyses over more than a year. The resulting report highlights Fuding white tea's remarkable health benefits, including anti-aging and skin-beautifying effects, anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, lipid-lowering and weight-loss benefits, blood-sugar regulation, uric acid control, liver protection, and even antiviral capabilities—all backed by robust scientific evidence.
The health and wellness benefits of Fuding white tea have long been recognized abroad, as evidenced by numerous reports in international media. For instance, in 2007, the prestigious British magazine *Best Nutrition* recommended that drinking white tea regularly can promote overall health. On May 4, 2009, *Reference News* quoted a report from the UK’s *Daily Telegraph*, highlighting how ancient Chinese white tea may help prevent obesity. This groundbreaking research was conducted by Germany’s Beiersdorf AG, a leading producer of health-care products. On August 18, 2009, Beijing Youth Daily published an article titled "White Tea Benefits Health and Helps Maintain Youthful Skin." Professor Declan Norton from Kingston University’s School of Life Sciences in southwest London noted that studies show white tea possesses powerful anti-aging properties, thanks to its exceptionally high levels of antioxidants—compounds known to play a crucial role in preventing diseases like cancer and heart conditions. Meanwhile, research from the American Cancer Research Foundation suggests that white tea contains a novel anti-cancer compound capable of continuously inhibiting and shrinking liver tumor growth, while also boosting the body’s immune function. Additionally, recent findings from Pace University in the U.S. reveal that white tea extracts effectively suppress the growth of harmful bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Pneumococcus.
As early as 2009, the Fuding Municipal Government invited the Institute of Food and Nutrition at the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct research on the immune benefits of Fuding white tea, as well as its potential in preventing and treating diabetes. According to findings released by Researcher Han Chi, Chairman of the Food Toxicology Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Toxicology: White tea boasts a simple production process that effectively preserves the nutritional components found in fresh tea leaves. It is particularly rich in compounds such as tea polysaccharides, theanine, and flavonoids, which not only help lower blood sugar levels efficiently but also enhance the body’s immune function.
This study on the health benefits of Fuding White Tea is notable for involving a wider range of institutions and covering a broader scope of research. It was first unveiled in mid-June by Professor Liu Zhonghua at the Beijing International Tea Expo. According to reports, the research findings will be showcased and presented separately in Hangzhou and Xiamen, as well as published in detail in leading domestic and international science, technology, and natural medicine journals. This will not only help more people discover the remarkable qualities of Fuding White Tea but also enable countless Chinese consumers to enjoy this legendary tea firsthand.
