Currently, it's the peak season for making Fuding white tea cakes, and many tea companies in Fuding City are actively producing and launching their products onto the market to seize lucrative opportunities in the tea industry.
Recently, Ruida Tea Company, located in Diandou Town, Fuding City, is bustling with production of Fuding White Peony tea cakes. According to Chen Jiarui, the company’s head, the current lineup of Fuding white tea cakes includes several varieties—such as aged white tea cakes, White Peony tea cakes, and newly crafted white tea cakes made using innovative techniques. Each type has stringent requirements for the quality of raw materials: fresh leaves must be tender, uniform, freshly picked, and ideally suited for processing. For instance, the aged white tea cakes are crafted from premium-quality Fuding Dabai and Fuding Dahao tea varieties, featuring first-flush spring leaves that have been aged for at least five years—a testament to their exceptional maturity and flavor. Meanwhile, the White Peony tea cakes are made from top-grade Fuding Dabai and Fuding Dahao teas harvested during the first spring flush, combined with select tender leaves from high-quality autumn harvests, all meticulously processed to perfection. Since last year’s auction at the Yuyuan International Tea Culture and Art Festival held in Shanghai, sales of Fuding white tea cakes have surged significantly this year. Currently, Ruida Company alone has received over ten orders from tea merchants across Beijing, Liaoning, Shandong, Guangdong, and other regions—totaling nearly 50,000 cakes. Chen Jiarui also shared with us that while the Mid-Autumn Festival traditionally marks a peak season for mooncake sales, it’s equally a busy time for tea commerce. After all, round-shaped tea cakes naturally evoke the festival’s theme of family reunion and harmony. To align with consumers’ growing emphasis on health and wellness, Chen plans to capitalize on this trend by introducing white tea-infused mooncakes this year, positioning them firmly as a “health-focused” gift option. With their elegant and sophisticated packaging—and backed by the well-established reputation of Fuding white tea as a healthy beverage—these tea cakes could very well become a standout choice in this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival gift market.
It is reported that white tea cakes are processed with minimal steps, preserving the natural, pure flavor of Bai Mudan tea cakes while retaining their rich, precious active enzymes and polyphenol nutrients. Lightly rolled during production, the process effectively breaks down the tea leaves' cell walls, allowing the tea's beneficial compounds to more easily dissolve when brewed with hot water. This results in a tea aroma that is rich, pure, fragrant, and deeply evocative—soft yet intensely aromatic—while the taste itself becomes smoother, more elegant, and profoundly refined. One of the standout features of Fuding aged white tea cakes is not only their robust, full-bodied flavor and exceptional ability to withstand multiple infusions, but also their remarkable ease of storage and preservation, making them the preferred method for crafting premium aged white teas today.
Because white tea has a relatively loose appearance, it is specially pressed into cakes for easier storage and portability. During storage, enzymatic reactions occur, creating a unique taste characterized by mellow aged fragrance and a sweet aftertaste. The liquor color resembles aged red wine, and the longer it is stored, the higher its medicinal value becomes—the older, the better. Fuding old white tea cakes have become not only a premium tea beverage but also the best choice for personal collection or gifts to relatives and friends, with potential for appreciation in value. At last year's auction during the Yuyuan International Tea Culture and Art Festival in Shanghai, a 20-year-old Fuding old white tea cake weighing 375 grams was sold for 188,000 yuan to a middle-aged "tea hunter." The record-breaking price for the old white tea cake has heated up the market for collecting aged white tea. In September this year, at the Fuding white tea health and wellness research results conference held in Hangzhou, white tea cakes, as specialty white tea products made with unique craftsmanship, also occupied a prominent position in the exhibition area, attracting the attention of attending experts.
