The author learned from the recently held 6th China Songyang Tea Traders Conference and Songyang Silver Monkey Tea Festival that, in spring 2013, prices for fresh tea leaves generally fell by 5% to 10%, while Fuding white tea saw a remarkable surge, with its fresh-leaf prices rising by an impressive 30% compared to last year.
Since the start of spring, rapid temperature rises combined with alternating sunny and rainy weather—though predominantly sunny conditions—have created ideal climatic conditions for tea buds to sprout. As a result, this year’s Fuding white tea spring harvest has begun about 10 days earlier than last year. According to surveys conducted in tea-growing areas across townships like Diandou, Bailin, and Dianxia, fresh spring tea leaves are currently of excellent quality and fetching high prices, presenting an encouraging outlook. Overall, spring tea production is showcasing the following key characteristics:
Spring tea harvesting has generally begun earlier this year. This year, the harvest started about 10 days earlier than last year, with early-bud varieties like "Zao Feng Chun" already being picked as early as February 24th in low-altitude tea regions such as Diandou Town. Currently, the city has fully entered the peak season for spring tea picking and processing, with tea farmers busy harvesting across the region and tea companies bustling with production activities.
Tea leaf prices have risen significantly. According to surveys conducted in townships like Diandou and Bailin, since March of this year, the price of Fuding Dahao single-bud tea has climbed to between 84 and 104 yuan per kilogram—up 16 to 20 yuan compared to last year. Meanwhile, the price for one bud with one or two unfolding leaves has reached 40 to 60 yuan per kilogram, an increase of 16 to 18 yuan from last year. Compared to last year, tea leaves harvested under the same standards now command prices roughly 30% higher.
The quality of tea leaves has improved significantly. Since the spring tea harvest began, the mild temperatures, clear skies, and gentle north winds have created ideal conditions for the growth of new tea shoots—and for picking and processing high-grade Fuding white teas like Taimu Silver Needle. As a result, the quality of the tea leaves has markedly improved.
