Located in Motuo County, Nyingchi Prefecture, at an altitude of over 1,000 meters and receiving around 2,000 millimeters of annual rainfall, Motuo enjoys a subtropical, humid climate on the eastern slopes of the Himalayas, with an average annual temperature of 16°C. Last October, after the successful first harvest of Tieguanyin tea, Motuo leveraged its exceptional natural conditions to begin trial planting of Fuding Dabai tea. This marks another significant step forward for the county’s ambitious “10,000-Mu Tea Garden” initiative.

  Introducing Fuding Da Bai Tea

Available to taste early next year

When "Fuding Dabai Tea" is mentioned, people naturally think of Ya'an in Sichuan. However, thanks to the strong advocacy of Huang Liping, a member of the seventh batch of Guangdong's aid-Tibet cadre and deputy director of the Motuo County Bureau of Agriculture and Pastoral Affairs, Fuding Dabai Tea—a nationally promoted variety from Mingshan County in Ya'an, Sichuan—has now officially been introduced to Motuo’s high-altitude organic tea base.

"Among them, the Bari Village high-altitude organic tea plantation in Motuo County spans 215 acres. After tea seedlings were transported from Sichuan to Motuo County in April, the Motuo County Bureau of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry promptly established a dedicated Tea Seedling Planting Leadership Group for Bari Village. Over 150 local farmers and herdsmen were divided into several teams, each led by a cadre from the bureau, who coordinated everyone’s efforts to carefully sort and plant the seedlings according to strict tea-growing standards. Currently, the tea seedlings at Bari Village are thriving beautifully," said Huang Liping yesterday. She also noted that land preparation and park construction for the Bangtang High-Altitude Organic Tea Demonstration Garden in Motuo County are currently in full swing. The demonstration garden covers 145 acres, and all tasks—including tea seedling planting—have already been completed. Meanwhile, Fuding Dabai tea plants enjoy a robust growth cycle lasting up to eight months annually, exhibiting strong resilience and vigor. By early next year, residents will finally be able to savor Fuding Dabai tea produced right here in Motuo."

  Highland Organic Tea Plantation

A "10,000-mu tea garden" will be established within three years.

The history of tea cultivation in Motuo County dates back to 2011. According to Zaxi, the county’s mayor, in 2011, technicians from the Ya’an Tea Factory in Sichuan conducted soil sampling and analysis in Motuo. The results revealed that Motuo’s soil—specifically its pH level and mineral composition—was exceptionally well-suited for tea cultivation. Over the following two years, aid-to-Tibet officials from Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, brought 660,000 Red Heart Tieguanyin tea seedlings from Zhangzhou, successfully planting them across 130 acres and later harvesting a bountiful crop.

“Tea cultivation is one of the key agricultural and pastoral industries that the aid team working in Motuo has committed to supporting through investment in the county,” said Zhaxi. The team plans to invest 8 million yuan over the next three years to establish 10,000 mu of high-altitude organic tea plantations. Meanwhile, the smooth progress of construction at the Bari Village High-Altitude Organic Tea Plantation Base and the Bangtang High-Altitude Organic Tea Demonstration Garden has marked another significant step forward in the agricultural and pastoral aid project aimed at building a “10,000-mu tea garden” in Motuo. This achievement also lays a solid foundation for the Motuo County government’s ambitious goal of reaching 5,000 mu of tea plantation area by 2014, as outlined in its broader plan for developing the local tea industry.

  Building for Development

  Green and Organic Tea Industry

When discussing Motuo's advantages in developing the tea industry, Zhaxi frankly noted that the region has historically relied almost entirely on natural, organic fertilizers—such as human and livestock manure, as well as decomposed plant matter—for agricultural production. As a result, crops grown locally are completely free of pesticide residues, making them genuinely eco-friendly and pollution-free. In fact, Motuo is uniquely positioned to build a thriving green and organic tea industry, and the region plans to carry forward this sustainable tradition in its future tea development efforts.

Regarding the promising future of Motuo tea production, Zhaxi shared his hopes: "Motuo County boasts unique geographical, ecological, and locational advantages that simply can't be replicated elsewhere. With the successful trial planting, promotion, harvesting of Red Heart Tieguanyin, and now the introduction and cultivation of Fuding Dabai tea, we believe that in the near future, Motuo's premium green and organic teas will not only stand out in the market but also earn recognition and appreciation from people around the world."
