From June 6 to 9, the 8th China Xi'an International Tea Expo was held at the Qujiang International Convention & Exhibition Center in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. The Fuding City Tea Industry Development Leading Group and the City Tea Association organized 18 leading tea enterprises—including Pinpinxiang, Guangfu, Tianhu, Tianfengyuan, Zhengyuan, Dingbai, Tianhao, Yurongxiang, Ruida, Sansanyuan, Wuyao, Lianfeng, Southeast White Tea, Fangming, Dayangshan Ecological, Sishicheng, Yaxiang, and Mingshan—to showcase their products at the event. At this year’s expo, Fuding white tea—particularly its aged varieties—proved especially popular, quickly becoming a new favorite among tea enthusiasts. This year’s Xi'an Tea Expo takes advantage of the opportunity presented by the joint construction of the "Silk Road Economic Belt," using the expo as a platform to promote China’s ancient tea culture while fostering trade partnerships between leading domestic tea brands and countries across West Asia. The exhibition area spans approximately 20,000 square meters, featuring over 1,000 booths. Notably, the Fuding white tea pavilion alone occupies an impressive 450 square meters, setting new records for both the largest number of participating tea companies and the biggest booth space in the history of the expo.
It is reported that during the Tea Expo, concurrent events will be held, including the Xi'an stop of the "Fujian Tea Across China" tour and a special promotion event dedicated to Fuding White Tea, as well as the grand "2nd Shaanxi Best Tea List" Brand Ceremony and the 2014 Annual Best Tea Selection. This collective participation by Fuding tea enterprises will serve as another powerful promotional platform for the renowned Fuding White Tea brand, further boosting the development of Fuding's tea industry. At the Fuding White Tea Special Promotion Event, Zhang Yun from the Shaanxi Institute of Archaeology shared with attendees the remarkable archaeological findings from the ancient Lü family tomb in Xi'an, once again confirming that the millennia-old white tea remnants unearthed at the site originated from Fuding, Fujian. Data released at this year’s Tea Expo reveal that Xi'an ranks among the top three cities nationwide in per capita tea consumption, capturing nearly half of the tea market share in Northwest China and placing its total market transactions firmly within the national top four. As Xi'an continues to experience rapid economic and social growth, its tea economy has steadily expanded as well. In particular, the city’s tea market has become increasingly vibrant in recent years, with transaction volumes rising annually. Meanwhile, driven by the overall rapid growth of China’s tea industry and surging consumer demand, white tea sales have surged dramatically, positioning it as a mainstream product and emerging as a key driver of new growth for China’s tea economy. Currently, tea merchants from Fuding have established 29 tea companies or retail outlets specializing in white tea across 15 major tea markets in Xi'an, including well-known brands like Qixingyan and Xikun. Additionally, leading local Fuding-based tea firms such as Pinpinxiang, Guangfu, Tianhu, Dingbai, Tianding, Tianfengyuan (all part of the Liumiao Group), and Fangming have set up 12 regional distribution centers, exclusive counters, or agency networks in Xi'an. In 2013, these Fuding-based businesses collectively generated white tea sales totaling 30 million yuan, with projections indicating that this figure could surpass 100 million yuan this year.
As the starting city of the New Silk Road Economic Belt, Xi'an has once again become the world's spotlight in response to the new challenge of jointly building the "Silk Road Economic Belt." Meanwhile, tea—once a hallmark of trade along the ancient Silk Road—has once again captured public attention, naturally positioning itself as a key asset for Shaanxi Province as it strives to lead and serve as a strategic bridgehead in this ambitious initiative. Today, Xi'an has emerged as one of the fastest-growing regions for China's tea economy, solidifying its pivotal role in tea trading across Northwest China. The city’s thriving tea market has now become a hot destination for tea merchants seeking investment opportunities and competitive advantages—following Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou—and has firmly established itself as the region's central hub for tea distribution and logistics in the northwest.
