It’s widely believed that white tea gets better with age. A sample of Fuding white tea—once awarded the title of "National Famous Tea" in 1982—made a remarkable reappearance on September 16 at the "Hundred Journalists Talk About White Tea: 2010 Fuding White Tea Mid-Autumn Tea Tasting Event," held in Sanfang Qixiang, Fuzhou. The tea, carefully preserved in a glass bottle sealed with wax by Chen Jinshui, our province’s renowned tea expert and the current holder of the sample, still exuded its elegant charm: the leaves remained pristine, with silvery-white tips, plump, robust, and perfectly straight—a testament to the enduring quality that has defined this celebrated Chinese tea for decades.
The tea-tasting event was hosted by the China Tea Circulation Association, the Straits Tea Industry Exchange Association, the Fujian Provincial Poverty Alleviation and Development Association, and the Fujian Provincial Journalists Association, with co-organization provided by the Fuding Municipal People’s Government and Straits Finance News Network. Over a hundred journalists from media outlets such as Xinhua News Agency, China News Service, Fujian Daily, Hong Kong Wenhui Po, and Hong Kong Commercial Daily gathered here to savor and discuss white tea—celebrating this unique Fujian tea often hailed as a "living fossil of the tea world." Among them, the health benefits of Fuding white tea quickly became the day’s hottest topic of conversation.
Prominent scholars and experts, including tea industry giant and centenarian Zhang Tianfu, Han Chi, a researcher at the Institute of Food Nutrition under China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Zhang Yun, a researcher at the Xi'an Institute of Archaeology, and Sun Weijiang, Director of the Department of Tea Science, Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, attended the tea-tasting event. They addressed journalists’ questions on hot topics such as the history, unique characteristics, and health benefits of Fuding white tea.
At the tea-tasting event, the Fuding City Tea Industry Development Leading Group signed a strategic partnership with Strait Finance News and established the Fuding White Tea Fuzhou Promotion Center at the Fulai Teahouse in Sanfang Qixiang, stepping up efforts to boost the popularity of Fuding white tea in Fuzhou. Meanwhile, it’s reported that Fuding white tea will also host several more events this year, including the highly anticipated "100 Writers Explore White Tea" event scheduled for late next month, aiming to deepen public appreciation for both the tea itself and its rich cultural heritage.
