“World-class white tea is found in China, and Chinese white tea thrives in Fuding.” Ninety-six percent of the world’s white tea comes from Fujian, while 80% of Fujian’s white tea is produced in Fuding.
Fuding white tea has its origins in ancient times, gained fame during the Tang and Song dynasties, and flourished especially during the Ming and Qing periods. Tracing its historical roots, ancient white tea is considered the ancestor of all Chinese teas. Legend has it that more than 4,000 years ago, during the reign of Emperor Yao, Madam Taomu—who lived on Mount Taomu (now known as Mount Taomu)—cultivated and perfected the art of making white tea to heal the sick, thus giving birth to this revered ancient variety. As recorded in Lu Yu’s "The Classic of Tea" from the Tang Dynasty: "Three hundred li east (or southeast) of Yongjia County (modern-day Wenzhou City) lies White Tea Mountain," clearly indicating that the original home of white tea is Fuding, Fujian Province.
Fuding is located along the coast of the East China Sea, at the intersection of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces. Within its borders lie the World Geopark and Taibao Mountain, a national 4A-level scenic area, as well as Yushan Island—one of "China's Top Ten Most Beautiful Islands." The city boasts a forest coverage rate of 65%, and its air quality has consistently ranked among the best in Fujian Province. Thanks to its unique geographic and climatic conditions, combined with an exceptionally favorable natural environment, Fuding is perfectly suited for tea cultivation. Here, the region’s renowned tea varieties—Fuding Dabai Tea and Fuding Dahao Tea—have thrived for generations. These high-quality tea cultivars have earned national recognition, officially designated as Hua Cha No. 1 and Hua Cha No. 2, respectively. Notably, Fuding Dabai Tea serves as the benchmark variety for China’s nationally approved tea tree strains. Fuding proudly holds titles such as "China’s Home of White Tea," "China’s Famous Tea Township," and "China’s Tea Culture Capital."
To date, Fuding's white tea trade has a history spanning over a century. Renowned for its pristine, natural qualities, Fuding white tea has gained immense popularity overseas—so much so that a popular Qing Dynasty saying went: "When marrying off their daughters, people don’t covet families of officials or nobles; instead, they inquire only about the Peony and Silver Needle teas." By the late Qing and early Republican eras, Fuding white tea had already been exported to 39 countries and regions across Europe and Asia. During the Republic of China period, Zhuo Jianzhou’s seminal work, *Taibushan Quanzhi*, eloquently captured the tea’s global appeal: "Green Snow Sprout, now known as Baihao, is shipped abroad at prices rivaling gold itself." Since entering the new millennium, with the growing international demand for white tea, Fuding white tea now enjoys vast potential for expansion. Today, as a rising star among premium teas, Fuding white tea is increasingly recognized and cherished by discerning connoisseurs for its unique and remarkable health benefits. It has particularly resonated in markets such as Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia, earning accolades like those from researcher Luo Shaojun, who aptly described it as "a distinguished family within China’s vast tea community—a hidden gem whose exceptional health-promoting properties are no less impressive than those of wild ginseng."
