Although the white tea-producing regions have been buzzing with activity lately, it seems that not many people in Fuzhou’s market are yet drawn to drinking white tea—perhaps the biggest reason being its "bland and insipid" taste. When I first tried white tea, I actually thought I’d never enjoy it. Yet, after spending some time with it, I found myself unexpectedly growing fond of its delicate flavor. As Chen Xinghua, a well-known white tea promoter from Fuding, once wisely put it: "With time, affection for aged white tea naturally blossoms."

The weather in Fuzhou at this time of year is already starting to feel slightly muggy and oppressive—there’s this persistent, heavy sensation, as if something’s weighing down your emotions and making it hard to breathe easily. After lunch, fatigue sets in even more strongly. Just then, you wonder what kind of tea could help perk you up. Suddenly, the image of white tea pops into your mind, almost bringing back the delicate, lingering flavor of the white tea you enjoyed just a month ago—still fresh on your palate.

Well, how about we sip some white tea? After pouring in the hot water, the elegantly pristine Silver Needle—dressed in its silvery-white coat—begins to dance gracefully inside the glass cup. Under the soft afternoon light, countless delicate white tips shimmer faintly, catching the glow as they float on the surface. Soon enough, the Silver Needle buds start soaking up the water, standing tall and straight at the bottom of the cup. Give the teacup a gentle shake, and instantly those tender bud tips begin to rise, dip, and swirl—a delightful rhythm that mirrors the uplifted mood in your heart.

To be honest, white tea doesn’t exactly have a stunning aroma or flavor that grabs attention—but during those brief moments between tasks, sipping from my cup always brings that subtle fragrance and gentle sweetness, neither too strong nor too faint.

It seems that true friendship is as subtle as water—white tea never aggressively seeks to please, nor does it deliberately shy away. Whether you cherish it or ignore it altogether, it simply remains steadfast, neither humble nor arrogant. And when you suddenly remember it, there it still is—neither warm nor indifferent. Yet, if you take the time to truly savor it, you’ll discover its unique aroma and flavor, gently nourishing your soul.
