On the afternoon of August 19, Cai Qi, Minister of the Organization Department of Zhejiang Province, attended the "Hangzhou Launch Event on Research Findings About the Health and Wellness Benefits of Fuding White Tea from Fujian," where he shared, "Every weekend, I always enjoy a cup of white tea at home—it’s the tea from my hometown."
Cai Qi got straight to the point at the meeting on Sunday afternoon, promoting tea from his hometown: "I’m from Fujian—and I even married into a family from Fuding, which is the birthplace of white tea. That’s why every weekend, I always make sure to enjoy a cup of white tea at home." He also noted that Fuding boasts two local treasures: Mount Taibao and Fuding Da Bai Cha tea. According to an old folk remedy passed down in the region, "If young people happen to break out with acne, drinking white tea can work wonders!"
Zhejiang Province ranks first in China for tea exports. At a press conference, officials from Fuding City emphasized that Hangzhou’s West Lake Longjing tea is widely regarded as the top among China’s ten most celebrated teas. Currently, Hangzhou is actively developing an international platform dedicated to tea culture and serving as a global hub for tea trading. Given this strategic positioning, hosting the "Fuding White Tea Health and Wellness Research Results Launch Event" in Hangzhou not only fosters greater exchange between West Lake Longjing and Fuding White Tea—two renowned tea varieties—but also leverages Hangzhou’s influential platform to promote Fuding White Tea’s rich cultural heritage and brand identity. This initiative aims to introduce Hangzhou residents to the storied history of Fuding White Tea, ultimately boosting its recognition and reputation on a broader scale.
Liu Zhonghua, a white tea researcher and professor at Hunan Agricultural University, explained that abroad, Chinese white tea commands prices 3 to 5 times higher than those of Chinese green tea—making it a case of "flowers blooming beautifully within the wall, yet their fragrance spreads far beyond."
Currently, Fuding White Tea has earned China's National Geographical Indication Certification Trademark, among other accolades. In 2012, during China's regional public brand value assessment for tea, the Fuding White Tea brand was valued at 2.456 billion yuan.
Fujian boasts a rich tea culture and is the birthplace of China’s three major tea families: white tea, oolong tea, and black tea. Among these, white tea stands out as one of China’s six renowned tea categories, distinguished by its unique production process—no frying or rolling is involved. Instead, fresh leaves undergo just two simple steps: withering and drying, making the craftsmanship remarkably straightforward. Locally, folklore tells the heartwarming tale of Lady Taibao using the "Green Snow Sprout" variety to heal a child suffering from measles, as well as the legendary story of Mao Yi, who dreamed of a divine prescription pairing "crucian carp with new tea" to save his ailing mother. Additionally, it’s customary in the region for people to brew white tea as a natural remedy to cool down the body and clear heat.
