Fuding white tea is making a strong comeback, backed by a rich history and deep-rooted heritage.
As a time-honored green beverage renowned for its health-promoting benefits, tea has become a globally beloved symbol of Eastern cuisine. Following green tea, black tea, and dark tea, Fuding white tea—celebrated for its potent wellness properties, encapsulated in the saying "One year makes it tea, three years turn it into medicine, and seven years transform it into a treasure"—has surged dramatically to claim its place as the biggest winner in the 2013 tea market.
Two years ago, white tea was largely overlooked due to its mild flavor—but now, people are even scrambling to buy it, with prices reaching nearly 10,000 yuan per jin. What exactly is the story behind this remarkable turnaround?
It is said that during Emperor Yao's reign, measles broke out across the area surrounding Mount Taomu. A rural woman named Lan Gu, living at the foot of the mountain, received guidance in a dream from the Southern Pole Immortal, who revealed to her the secret of using white tea to cure measles. Driven by her compassionate heart, Lan Gu tirelessly gathered and sun-dried white tea leaves, carefully delivering them to every mountain village so she could brew the tea for children suffering from the disease. In the end, Lan Gu not only helped her fellow villagers overcome the measles epidemic but also earned her place as one of Fujian's three great goddesses—alongside Mazu, Chen Jinggu, and Lady Taomu.
Legend isn’t entirely without foundation—Mount Taomu is located directly south of Fuding City in Fujian Province. According to historical research, the name “white tea” first appeared in the seventh chapter of Lu Yu’s *The Classic of Tea*, written during the Tang Dynasty, which mentions: “Three hundred li east of Yongjia County lies Mount Bai Cha.” Professor Chen Yuan, in his *A Comprehensive History of Tea*, clarifies: “The ‘three hundred li east of Yongjia’ actually refers to the sea; the phrase likely misread ‘south’ as ‘east.’ In reality, ‘three hundred li south’ points to Fuding, Fujian (which was part of Changxi County during the Tang Dynasty)—the very birthplace of white tea.” This clearly indicates that by the Tang Dynasty, the “Bai Cha” variety had already been cultivated in Changxi County (present-day Fuding, Fujian).
Elegant and refined flavors for healthful living—White Tea Forum: Tea Experts Discuss Tea
White tea's remarkable rise is rooted in its rich historical and cultural heritage, but even more so in its powerful health and wellness benefits.
White tea is a gem among teas, renowned for its intact buds, delicate and fresh floral aroma, bright yellow-green, crystal-clear liquor, and subtly sweet, lingering aftertaste. It also boasts numerous health benefits, including relieving alcohol intoxication, clearing heat, nourishing the lungs, calming the liver while boosting blood circulation, reducing inflammation, detoxifying the body, lowering blood pressure, diminishing fat levels, and alleviating fatigue. In particular, it proves uniquely effective in addressing physical discomforts and digestive issues caused by excessive smoking, drinking, or consuming overly greasy foods—and especially when accompanied by heightened liver heat. Traditionally crafted into refined "white tea cakes," this beverage has captivated taste buds with its elegant, mild flavor and remarkable health-promoting properties. Its popularity spread far beyond China, reaching as far as Southeast Asia, where it continues to be highly regarded across countries in the region today.
Fuding white tea boasts particularly powerful health and wellness benefits. On August 19, 2012, five leading domestic research institutions—including the National Research Center for Engineering Technology of Plant Functional Components—released their groundbreaking study on the efficacy of white tea in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. For the first time, Fuding white tea, long admired by scientists in Europe and America, has received official recognition and systematic validation from Chinese researchers.
Research findings reveal that Fuding white tea not only effectively neutralizes excess oxygen free radicals, but also significantly boosts the vitality and proliferative capacity of skin cells and brain nerve cells. Additionally, it markedly increases the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the gut, while reducing the presence of harmful bacteria like Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus. This helps restore a balanced distribution of gut microbiota and effectively supports digestive health.
Meanwhile, the research center has also rigorously analyzed and identified eight remarkable benefits of Fuding white tea, including its roles in beauty and anti-aging, preventing photoaging of skin cells, lowering blood lipids and blood sugar levels, repairing alcohol-induced liver damage from excessive drinking, reducing inflammation, balancing gut microbiota, and promoting digestive health. Additionally, studies have shown that aged white tea outperforms freshly produced white tea in several key areas—such as combating inflammation, managing blood sugar levels, restoring alcohol-related liver damage, and improving gastrointestinal function.
The precious health benefits of Fuding white tea have garnered significant attention from various sectors. On the evening of May 21, 2013, the "Cross-Strait Forum on Aging White Tea for Health Preservation" kicked off at Dinglaigui Old White Tea Specialty Store. On that day, attendees included Fan Zengping, Chairman of the Taiwan Chinese Tea Culture Association and Professor at Taiwan Mingxin University of Science and Technology; Zeng Zhangtuan, Editor-in-Chief of Fujian Literature Magazine; Chen Baoshu, former Chief Physician of the Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine Department at the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University; tea writer Tu Zhentou—and nearly a hundred other tea enthusiasts—all gathered to exchange insights on topics such as aging white tea tasting, its health-promoting properties, and proper storage methods.
"‘I believe white tea has four distinct characteristics: timelessness, artistry, flavor, and medicinal benefits. In particular, from a medicinal standpoint, white tea is especially beneficial for older individuals or those with high blood pressure. However, it’s best to enjoy white tea within the first five infusions, and the ideal drinking temperature should be kept between 45°C and 50°C,’ Professor Fan Zengping began."
Mr. Zeng Zhangtuan noted that white tea is "tea in its first year, medicine after three years, and a treasure after seven." "Once, when I visited Southeast Asian countries, I noticed these nations were selling white tea as a medicinal product—indeed, white tea could only be found in pharmacies there." Meanwhile, Luo Shaojun, director of the National Tea Quality Inspection Center, shared a personal story about a friend who, suffering from a fever, chose not to seek medical treatment but instead opted to drink white tea for two days—miraculously, the fever quickly subsided.
Now in his 60s, tea writer Tu Zhentu still looks like he’s in his 40s. He shared his own story with white tea: "I teach at a school while also writing novels—most of them centered around the theme of tea. To avoid disrupting my work at the school, I get up every day at 3 a.m. to write. And the very first thing I do when I wake up is brew and enjoy a full pot of white tea. I find that after drinking it, my energy levels soar, and I feel incredibly refreshed and at ease." Meanwhile, Dr. Chen Baoshu explained that white tea has a remarkably potent regulatory effect on the human body’s digestive functions.
It also boasts "three reductions and three resistances"—namely, reducing blood pressure, lowering blood sugar, and decreasing lipid levels—along with remarkable antioxidant, anti-radiation, and anti-aging benefits.
During the event, Ding Laigui also presented three white tea products—3-year-old, 5-year-old, and 7-year-old white teas—and demonstrated two distinct brewing methods: steeping and boiling. This allowed tea enthusiasts to gain a deeper understanding of Fuding white tea by comparing the unique characteristics of each preparation method.
Savoring tea, discussing profound insights, and envisioning the future—Fuding white tea promotes health for all.
Traveling through the rich aroma of history, savoring the timeless essence of tea—white tea has recently become the central theme at numerous tea culture events. Recently, the "I’m Waiting for You in Xi’an" event, organized by Xi’an Tianhong Industrial and China Mingcha Network, hosted a grand gathering of tea enthusiasts titled "A Cup of Fragrant Tea Connects Past and Present; Everyone Speaks of the Red Charm of Chang'an." As part of the event, Qixingyan Tea Industry, representing the Fuding White Tea Northwest Promotion Center, was invited to showcase and promote white tea culture, sharing its health benefits with fellow tea lovers.
As a key highlight of the calligraphy and painting activity within Chang'an’s tea culture experience series "Chess, Qin, Calligraphy, and Painting," renowned Chinese artist Yang Jinlu personally attended the event, engaging in an elegant and harmonious exchange of artistic creation with fellow tea enthusiasts. Mr. Yang is a nationally recognized first-class calligrapher and painter, celebrated for his exceptional talent in the art world—and he happens to be an avid lover of tea culture, particularly possessing a unique perspective on Chang'an's esteemed tea traditions. Mr. Yang shared with everyone that, according to CCTV reports, archaeologists unearthed tea leaves dating back over a thousand years to the Song Dynasty during their excavation of the Lü family tomb—a site once home to the founders of Xi'an Beilin Museum. Surprisingly, these ancient tea leaves turned out to be some of the rarest and most exquisite white teas ever discovered. The presence of white tea among the elite tea-drinking circles of Northern Song-era Xi'an not only underscores the historical roots of white tea in China but also firmly establishes its legacy as far back as the Tang and Song dynasties. Indeed, this remarkable find confirms that Fuding white tea had already made its way to the ancient capital of Chang'an long before modern times. Today, as participants donned traditional Hanfu attire to savor the refined, mellow, and deeply evocative flavors of authentic Fuding aged white tea, the event perfectly captured the theme: "Traversing History Through Tea Fragrance, Savoring Millennia of Tea Elegance." The serene ambiance, paired with the tea’s exquisite taste, created an unforgettable sensory journey—one that resonated deeply in the heart and left an indelible mark of timeless charm.
Enterprise representatives gave an on-site presentation on the health benefits of Fuding white tea. Professor Yang graciously inscribed the eight vibrant, naturally elegant characters "Fuding White Tea: Health for All," which he later entrusted to the company for donation to relevant departments in Fuding—symbolizing his heartfelt wish for the healthy growth of the white tea industry and for Fuding white tea to continue enriching people around the world. Professor Yang’s calligraphy piece received unanimous praise from the tea enthusiasts present, yet it also sparked concerns among seasoned tea experts about the current state of the white tea industry. Many agreed that white tea is currently being overly hyped, a trend that could ultimately harm the industry’s long-term development. They emphasized that tea professionals should maintain a calm and balanced mindset, while simultaneously strengthening and refining industry oversight mechanisms. Only then can Fuding white tea avoid following the same path as Pu-erh tea—losing its momentum and tarnishing its esteemed reputation—and instead pave the way for the sustainable, thriving future of the entire white tea sector!
Tea enthusiast @TeaCommunity shared that the grand launch of the "Fuding White Tea: Healthy China Tour" event—hosted in June by the China Tea Circulation Association and the Fuding Municipal People's Government—in Beijing marks a significant milestone for Fuding white tea as it expands beyond its production region, reaches across China, and steps onto the global stage. As Beijing serves as a vibrant hub for tea culture dissemination and exchange in China, this series of events will play a pivotal role in boosting awareness and enhancing the reputation of Fuding white tea, while also promoting its health-focused philosophy. Ultimately, it will help solidify Fuding white tea’s image as "Healthy Tea for China," paving the way for its broader recognition and success on the international front. Tea lovers are eagerly anticipating that the "Fuding White Tea: Healthy China Tour" won’t just be the beginning of Fuding white tea’s nationwide journey—it’ll also serve as the inspiring start to realizing the beautiful vision of "Fuding White Tea: Healthy Tea for the World!"
